Absa Premiership Tuesday wrap

By

Round 25 of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership saw six of its eight fixtures played on Tuesday night and the big winners were Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns - as well as the fans, who saw no less than 19 goals scored.
Cape Town City established themselves as genuine title contenders with a 3-2 home win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Mother City. The teams looked likely to end all square at 2-2, but City’s Judas Moseamedi popped up with a goal in the third minute of injury time to seal a stunning victory which leaves his team two points clear at the top of the log.
The chasing pack is now led by champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who leapfrogged into second place with a 2-0 home win over Ajax Cape Town thanks to goals from Percy Tau and Themba Zwane.
The Brazilians took full advantage of Chiefs’ defeat in Cape Town, as well as a 1-0 home defeat for Gavin Hunt’s Bidvest Wits - the Clever Boys were overpowered on their own turf by a SuperSport United team no doubt playing with extra determination brought on by the health problems of their coach Stuart Baxter.
Polokwane City and Maritzburg United both boosted their hopes of a top-eight finish with impressive wins at home to Golden Arrows and away to Chippa United respectively, while the relegation six-pointer between Bloemfontein Celtic and Highlands Park ended in a 1-1 draw which will satisfy neither team.
The round will be completed by two matches on Wednesday night: Orlando Pirates will play host to bottom-of-the-log Baroka FC, while Platinum Stars and Free State Stars will cross swords at Moruleng Stadium outside of Rustenburg.
