A 10-year-old maid is currently battling for her life after her master beat her to a pulp and rubbed pepper into her injuries in Abia.
A middle-aged man identified as Chibuike Onwuchekwa is in serious trouble after he allegedly beat his 10-year-old maid to a pulp and then rubbed pepper into the injuries he inflicted on her as further punishment.
Vanguard reports that the incident happened in the Umuga Ovom community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, after the girl failed to fill two drums with water at a stipulated time.
It was gathered that Onwuchekwa and his wife had sent the young girl to fill the two water containers in their house from a nearby borehole, while they left for church service on Sunday, May 28, 2017.
But when the couple returned from church, they discovered the girl was unable to fill the two containers before the borehole owner closed shop for the day.
In anger, Onwuchekwa was said to have descended on the girl and beat her so that he inflicted severe injuries on her, rubbed pepper into the injuries he had inflicted on her, locked her up and left for an event with his wife, despite pleas from neighbours to set the girl free.
A resident of the community who gave his name simply as Nkem, said they decided to invite the police when the girl escaped from the house to inform them that Onwuchekwa had poured a mixture of salt and pepper on the injuries he inflicted on her during the earlier beating.
Nkem disclosed that the girl had suffered several of such beatings from Onwuchekwa and his wife, citing an instance when she was accused of theft in her school and her master still tortured her even when she was absolved of the accusation by her teachers.
Though the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna, when contacted said he was not aware of the incident, a senior police officer at the Eastern Ngwa Division, confirmed the incident, adding that the girl is receiving medical attention while Onwuchekwa has been arrested and is in detention.
