5 persons die during stampede for N500 in Katsina

Five persons have been confirmed dead during a struggle to collect the sum of N500 alms at the end of the day's fast at the Rafin Dadi, Katsina State residence of a business tycoon, Kamal Ma’a Gafai.

Northern News reports that the five people who died included a 40-year-old woman and four minors who were trampled to death by the surging crowd while attempting to collect 'Zakat' from one Kamal Ma’a Gafi who was giving the alms.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], DSP Gambo Isah, said the incident also left 15 persons with serious injuries.
DSP Isah added that Ma’a Gafi has been arrested and investigations into the incident have begun in full.
According to DSP Isah, victims from the incident were taken to the General Hospital in the state while some with lesser injuries have been treated and discharged.
